LEAGUE DIRECTOR TIP OF THE WEEK |
By Mitchell Seidenfeld
Tip #3: Build Your Mailing List
I’m not an expert on database management or any other computer-related activity, but one thing of which I’m certain is that you must begin to build your mailing list now. You can do it with specialized electronic mailing list (e-list) software, an excel spreadsheet, or a pencil and paper.

An up-to-date mailing list will be your most effective tool for promoting leagues, tournaments, or coaching programs. Start by listing the name, address, phone numbers, and email of all the players you know about. Then, contact USATT to receive a list of all the current USATT members in your state and add them to your list. Don’t stop there. Continue to add contact information for every person you meet who enjoys the sport of table tennis. If someone contacts you by phone or email after seeing your name listed as a contact person, add them to your list. If a new player finds their way into your club, get their contact information. If you, or anyone from your club, do an exhibition, get contact information from all who express interest. Be relentless. Try to add as many contacts as possible to your mailing list. It doesn’t cost you anything to communicate by e-mail.
Remember, any person who contacts you about the sport of table tennis is a qualified lead. Get them on your mailing list even if they don’t join your club, register for a league, or buy a custom-made racket right away. You never know when a person will make their decision to get involved in organized table tennis; it could be years after they first become aware of your club or league.
