The inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore started the table tennis section and Ariel Hsing (San Jose, Calif.) started with a couple wins before dropping a pair of close contests prior to the quarterfinal round. Hsing, who is ranked No. 2 in the United States, lost the first match Sunday against Isabelle Li of Singapore, 3-1. Up next, Hsing was shutout by Korea’s Ha Eun Yang, 3-0.
Hsing started the first match against Li with a 12-10 win, but lost the next three: 11-4; 11-5; 11-9. Yang proved strong in the second match of the day with 11-8; 13-11; and 11-6 victories.
“I lost both of my matches which is kind of a bummer,” said Hsing. “If I had won one, I would have advanced to the quarterfinals. Both were really good players.”
Up next for Hsing will be the mixed team event on Tuesday, Aug. 24. Hsing will play with Axel Gavilan of Paraguay on the Pan American 1 team. Their opponents are teams from Japan and Brazil.
Hsing started the Table Tennis tournament on Saturday with two wins and one loss. She opened with a shutout over Carelyn Cordero of Puerto Rico, 3-0. Hong Kong’s Ka Yee Ng defeated Hsing, 3-2. Hsing finished the first day with a 3-1 victory over Nuwani Vithanage of Sri Lanka.
Table tennis is one of 26 events contested at the inaugural multi-sport youth event. The international event anticipates about 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees. The table tennis athletes will be between the ages of 15 and 16. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
