Question: "I play about mid distance, and my backhand feels like it is too
slow, and I was thinking about upgrading to a faster rubber. I like the feel
of the Tackifire when I am close to the table and making a slow high spin
backhand loop, but I am having trouble when I back away from the table. I
am looking for a new rubber for my backhand and was wondering what you would
recommend."
Answer: Hi Brian, Best wishes, |
Current Blade: -
Current Forehand: Bryce FX 2.1
Current Backhand: Mendo Energy 2.0
Question: "I'm looking for a Butterfly blade to fit my offensive play style. I
mostly attack from mid-distance with fast loops, but also with slow heavy spin loops.
I was thinking about the Petr Korbel or the Michael Maze. I've heard good things about both for offensive mid-distance play. I think the Petr Korbel would be good, but I’m not sure if I'll be able to get enough speed out of it for those fast killer loops.
I was hoping to get a bit more info about these two blades and how they would go with my play style.
Thanks in advance."
Answer: They are both good mid distance blades; I played with both of them. Korbel is a bit more flexible and Maze is a little faster. If you do not speed glue, I would suggest the Maze or even faster blades like Viscaria or Timo Boll. Masaaki Tajima, U.S. Certified National Coach |

Question: "Hi sir, I actually reside in India and with the national

looper and top spinner so what is your backhand rubber suggestion."

Question: "I'm currently playing with a pre-assembled Stiga racket, the Stiga
Eurotech. It cost about $40. I know its probably not up to par with some of
the Butterfly Proline models but it does generate pretty good spin with
great control. I got into table tennis about a year ago and I absolutely love
playing. I want to start playing tournaments and get better. I like to think
of myself as an all around offensive player. I've got heavy top spin on my
forehand and just as much on my backhand. I was looking at the Jonyer-H
Proline because it seems to be an entry-level price for the Proline rackets
and looks like something I could experiment with. Do you think this would be
a good choice?"

Question: "Hi. I am a Table Tennis and Butterfly enthusiast who likes to try different products. I have several Butterfly Blades including VSG21-4000, Primorac off minus, Primo Vitesse carbon and the new Balsa X3. As the head
size on these blades vary, it is not easy to swap rubbers around to try different combinations. I am thinking off trimming the larger blades such as the Balsa X3 and Primorac off minus so that they are all the same profile. What do you think to this idea? Regards Neil"
Answer: Hi Neil, As a coach, I would also advise that you find a combination that you like and try to stay with it for a period of time. Switching equipment on a regular basis might be fun, but it will hold back your technical development. Best wishes, |

Question: "I'm looking to build my paddle now. I'd like to use the Firehand because I enjoy good pace in my game. But for the rubber I was thinking something that had more spin/control to it, possibly Tackifire C. I'm a taller/athletic guy and I think that if I need to I can generate the pace.
Of course I’m no professional can you make a suggestion?"

Question: "Looking to buy a new racket but don't know were to start. I play close to the table around 1 to 3 feet away and use chops on my backhand most often. On the forehand, I look to use heavy topspin but not with a lot of
speed, maybe a medium speed topspin. The Timo Boll racket looks like it might be for me but don't know about the rubber to use, if you could recommend two different blades with the rubber, one with a little more speed than the other, it would be greatly appreciated, I am looking to buy 2 rackets I just need some advice."

Question: "I am looking to upgrade. I need a blade that allows me to keep
the pressure on people. I am an offensive player, and I play at a midrange
from the table. I need a racket that will optimize my game."
Answer: Hi Tommy What is your level of play? Do you have a rating? Masaaki Tajima I am using the Stiga Ultimate preassembled racket at the moment. It cost $24.99 It has a 42 out of 60 rating and is a relatively fast racket. It doesn't quite move fast enough for me though, and I would like more top/back spin on my slams. I am a cut/slam player and I play at about a mid distance from the table. I'm not entirely sure what rubber is on the racket, but it is the original rubber from the stock racket. Also, a flare handle is a must. Let me know if anything else is needed. Tommy Hi Tommy I suggest, medium to medium-high speed racket like Butterfly’s Bastian Steger and Sriver FX on the forehand and Tackifire C Soft on the backhand. Sriver FX because for your level, it gives you controlable speed and spin for your forehand, and Tackifire C Soft for your backhand for more spin and less speed, because you probably use your backhand more to chop. You can select the handle of your choice and Butterfly will custom assemble it for you. Masaaki Tajima, U.S. Certified National Coach |
Question: "Dear Sir...I have recently bought and use Butterfly PowerSponge Bryce FX. I like it very much. But I face a problem after a few days. The rubber starts to peel off at the side after I took it out from the Alusic Bag. I use Basic Chack to stick the the rubber on my Taskim blade. I suspect it is the moisture created when I blow the air into the Alusic bag that causes the rubber to start peeling. I have reglued it a couple of times and the problem still persists and it usually occurs (the peeling) on the same side of the rubber. This has constantly bothered me. Please advise what I can do to prevent this. Your advice is deeply appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Cheers....Clang"

Question: "I have decent serves but need more speed and spin for my forehand loop, but also more spin and control for my backhand. Do you think upgrading the blade to carbon/arylate with Bryce and Tackfire Soft for the back would be a good idea? What do you suggest?"
Answer: I think you made a good choice; faster and spinier on the forehand and slower Tackifire rubber on the backhand. My question and concerns are; what is your level of play because, this combination (forehand) maybe too fast for you to handle. If you are above 1700 with basic fundamentals in place, you can learn to make the most of if, increasing your level of play. But if you are below 1700, I suggest sticking with slower blade and rubber on both sides until your skill levels are higher. If you make the switch, train and get used to it and find your comfort zone before playing in a tournament. Masaaki Tajima |

Question: "Hi, I just bought this pre assembled paddle with 2.1 mm foam thickness, which is great for my attacks. I play mainly for fun but I would like to have the paddle custom to my likings. I like the catapult rubber
for my attacks, but I want to get a defensive type rubber to replace one side of my paddle because the catapult is very fast. What do you recommend? What foam thickness is best? Also would I have to buy glue as well for application? Thanks a lot.... Greg"

Question: "I just bought the PowerSponge Bryce FX and I am wondering about how to glue it. I read several forums online that it will shrink after a while, so they suggest letting the glue dry for about 5 hours before putting the rubbers on. I am not sure if that would be a good idea; won't it make the "glue effect" disappear faster since some solvent would evaporate away and would glue sheet solve that problem or should i just stick to normal gluing? Thank You."

Question: "I'm having some problems with looping (hard to feel spin). Sure, I can make great spin or no spin, but the point is I need more control over it. I like the blade very much for its control, so I'm thinking about changing rubbers to (a) harder (sponge). My coach agrees. I tried Tibhar Rapid Max - spin ok, but the feeling of other elements are gone ...
May be something in the middle, like EL 2.1?
P.S. Don't need crazy speed (Bryce, G2... etc), just good controllable offensive game.
Thank you"
Answer: Thanks you for your question. I think you need to go another route to get what you need. If you have Sriver FX, which is our softest rubber then it is not in your best interest to use Sriver EL because the sponge is harder. If you want good speed and spin, with a low trajectory then I suggest you use Cermet. It has a very soft sponge for great feel and a heavy topsheet for controlled power shots whether it is spin or speed. That is my suggestion for you. Forehand Rubber suggestion: Cermet, 2.1mm Good luck, |

Question: "I"m not quite sure what my "style"
is. What I'm good at is keeping the ball on the table, but don't seem to have a "plan" for setting up a smash or other winning shots.
With practice, I think I'd have a decent forehand topspin/loop. I'm thinking about switching to Cermet on the forehand and Sriver G2 on the backhand. Good idea or too fast of rubber?"
Answer: Thank you for your question. I would suggest the rubber Tackifire C Soft. It is the next generation in our rubbers with soft sponge and heavy spin topsheet. It will give you good spin over the table, low trajectory on your serves, and soft feel for block hard attack shots. For the backhand, I would suggest Catapult on your backhand. It has a "built in” glue effect and it spins just as well as it hits. This combo would most benefit enhancing your game without any pitfalls. Forehand rubber suggestion: Tackfire C - Soft, 2.1mm Good luck, |

Question: "I would like to change my blade and rubbers so that I can get
more power on my forehand and more control in my backhand block/loop?"
Answer: Thank you for your question, and I agree that it's time for an upgrade. Based on your previous racket, I think your blade choice should be the Firehand Blade. It is a very solid blade with a very big sweetspot. It will feel like you are hitting a homerun every time you make contact with the sweetspot. The rubber choice that I suggest for the forehand is Sriver-EL, as it will give you great spin control and feel from close to mid-distance off the table. The backhand rubber I suggest is Catapult. It has a soft sponge, and has a great glue effect. It is an upgrade from the Tibhar Rapid. Racket suggestion: Firehand Good luck with your decision making, |

Question: "Hi, I'm in the market to buy a new blade. My coach has suggested the Timo Boll Spirit for my style. However, I'm looking through the blades, and I found the Michael Maze to be really similar. Which one do I choose?
Also, I have been thinking of upgrading from Sriver to Sriver-EL. Would this help my game more? I am a close to the table two winged looper."
Answer: Thank you for your question Kinzeo. Both of the blades you are looking at are good, and they are close to each other in class and speed. I would suggest the Michael Maze, though. It is 2gms lighter and has a bigger sweet spot than the Spirit. With the suggestion of rubber, I think that the Sriver G2 is the upgrade you need. It has the "High Tension" technology, which gives you a faster rebound off the racket without any lost of control on the shot. Using the Sriver G2 would allow you to keep your current distance from the table and execute more power shots. Using the Sriver-EL would put you off the table to a mid-distance position. That would have you changing the way you play your shots. So I would not recommend Sriver-EL. Racket suggestion: Michael Maze I hope this information makes your decision making process easier. Question: "I got used (to) playing with this blade and rubber but after few months I feel that I need more power and more control. Is there any advice for me how to bring up my playing skills with some new blade or rubber and minimize the cost?"
Answer: I think you have a good combination, Igor. If you have to do an upgrade because you feel like you need more power, I would suggest you upgrade to the rubber Sriver G2. It gives you 18% more power without sacrificing any loss of control because of the high tension technology. If you have to go with a blade, I would suggest the Michael Maze. It's not such a big jump up in power. If you want more power, then I would choose the Firehand. |

Question: "My background is penhold pips out so my skill is mainly smashing. Now I switched to handshake but the blade is too fast, the balls just fly away with no control. I like the Sriver EL what other blade will be good for me? Or should I change rubber to match the Firehand?"
Answer: It's a very bold & gutsy move you are taking in changing your style. But in changing rackets, you change the characteristics of how you play. Some thing will disappear, some things will evolve. I would suggest you keep the same rubber, but use the Primorac racket. It has been our most popular selling racket every year. The speed and control puts you right down the middle. It's a good starter racket, and once you have developed this new style you can later choose a racket that fits it. |

Question: "My rubbers are currently 3 years old and I am feeling the effects of time. My question is what rubber should I buy to replace my current? I play drive + spin and heavy spin on both sides. and I intend to play close to table. My coach says that my serves are my asset to the game. so please advice."
Answer: Thank you for your question. You do have a very good combination of racket and rubber. I think you can stay with the rubber that you have. If your rubbers are 3 yrs old, then just getting new rubbers is what you need right now. Rubber sheets will usually last around 5 months for a person that is playing 2-3 times per week. So if your rubbers are 3 years old, they have totally different characteristics at this point. So just get new rubbers sheets. If you do play heavy spin shot, with hard drives I would suggest that you get 2.1mm sponge thickness if you don't have it. |
