2012 Indiana Open
Indianapolis, IN
From six states across the Midwest, and two foreign countries, sixty nine players braved the heat and humidity of the hottest summer in central Indiana in recent memory to compete in the Butterfly sponsored 2012 Indiana Open. At stake over the two day tournament, hosted at the Table Tennis Club of Indianapolis, was more than $1,700 in cash prizes and awards. The eleven events in the tournament were played on Butterfly Centrefold 25 Sky tables and Gerflor® flooring.
Top players in the tournament were Gregor Surnin (2011 German Top 12 Junior Champion; 2011 German Junior Boys Doubles Champion; and 2011 German Junior Mixed Doubles Champion), Richard Breitschopf (2012 German National Junior Teams Champion), Daniel Seemiller, Jr. (2008 U.S. National Junior Team member; 2010 & 2012 Indiana Mens Singles Finalist), Stephen Clyde (2010 & 2011 Indiana Mens Singles Champion; 2008 & 2010 Indiana Open Champion), and Robert Luo (2008 Indiana Open Finalist & 2011 Indiana Mens Singles Finalist). Among the sixty nine registered players were fourteen juniors, including Pasinn T-U Tangrattanachotukul, an exchange student from Thailand, and Richard Breitschopf, an exchange student from Germany. Overall, these juniors made a great showing for themselves, placing in seven and winning three of the eleven events.
As play progressed match results were largely in line with seedings. Very few significant upsets were recorded, and all but two events were won by either the first or second seed in the event.
In the Over 1500 event, Surnin, Breitschopf, Clyde, and Federico Bassetti reached the semifinals. When Surnin defeated Clyde and Breitschopf downed Bassetti, an all-German final was set. Although Breitschopf squeezed out the second game in deuce, Surnin prevailed in the other three to capture his first title of the day. In the Open event, held later the same day, Surnin and Breitschopf again reached the final, where Surnin claimed his second title with a 3-0 victory.
