Michael Maze (DEN)
The hairstyle change more often than a chameleon changes colors; but that is Michael Maze.
He is distinctive, he attracts the attention whether it be for the flowing locks, razor short hair, or the most recent addition of tattoos penciled on his forearm; a sleeveless shirt being worn to display his Viking warrior ancestry as he plies his trade.
Born on Monday September 1, 1981 in Faxe, Demark; Michael Maze is much more than a mere fashion icon who struts his wares center court. He is an immensely talented table tennis player.
The 30-year-old Dane belongs to that very special group of players to whom everything comes easily; explain the dynamics of a forehand top spin and he can transfer theory into practice with the greatest of ease.
It is a fact of which he is well aware. “You can win as a junior on talent alone”, he said. “However when you are 16 years old and you want to became a good senior player; then it does not matter how much talent you possess, you must work.”
Talent took him to both Cadet Boys’ and Junior Boys’ Singles titles at the European Youth Championships, hard work took him to the senior title several years later.
It is his accuracy and especially from the forehand to control the ball with various degrees of top spin that has made into a world star; his escapades at the Volkswagen 48th World Championships are part of table tennis folklore.
Few will forget when he retreated from the table, produced a seemingly never ending series of high topspin returns to beat China’s Wang Hao before saving three match points, one sitting on the floor, to recover from a three games to nil deficit to beat Hao Shuai.
The incredible skill of Michael Maze was clearly displayed; the result was that at end of the year his achievements were recognized in his native Denmark.
He received the “BT Gold” award, the prize given to the country’s most successful sportsman.
Unquestionably, Michael Maze has the credentials; in London’s ExCel Arena at the London Olympic Games, he might just be the man to produce the unexpected.
