TT CANADA HOST UNCLE POP 2017 WOMEN WORLD CUP

Mo Zhang and Paul Qi Headline and Canadian Championships

(by Steve Hopkins)

Mo Zhang dominated the Women’s Singles Event at the Canadian Championships last week in Mississauga Canada.  Zhang’s scores of her four matchess were 3-0, 3-0, 3-1, and 3-0).  Zhang defeated Crystal Liu in the Final.  Crystal  was a surprise, as she was the 8th seed in the event and maneuvered her way past a number of higher ranked opponents, including a 3-0 win over Ivy Liao (the second seed).

Eugene Wang was the top seed in Men’s Singles, but when he had to withdraw, that opened the door for Paul Qi (the third ranked player in the event).  Max Ji advanced past Wang via walkover and then Qi topped Ji 3-0.  In the bottom half of the draw, Edward Ly upset Jeremy Hazin.  Ly then advanced past Chen Hongtao in a walkover that took him to the Final.  Once again, Paul Qi took advantage, winning the Final  3-0.

Some other notable wins:  Martin Simeon won both Boys U19 Singles and Boys U19 Teams, Chin Nam Fu won both U19 Girls Singles and U19 Girls Teams and also won Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, Jeremy Hazin won in Mixed Doubles, Edward Ly was a part of the first place Boys U19 Team, and Zelin Ye won Boys U15 Singles.
