March Break: A Time for Rest Or High-Level Competition

(by Bowmar Sports)

For many students, March Break is a time to rest and recharge. However, for some, it is also an opportunity to pursue their passions at the highest level. Jessie Xu, a Grade 11 student from Oakville, Ontario, and a member of the Canadian National Table Tennis Senior and Under 19 Junior teams, is one such student.

Over the past March Break, Jessie represented Canada at the World Table Tennis Youth Contender tournament in Asunción, Paraguay (March 13–16, 2025). Competing against top-seeded players from Spain, the USA, Puerto Rico, and the Republic of Korea, she showed remarkable resilience. Despite not being a top seed herself, Jessie advanced through the group stage, battled through tough elimination matches against higher-ranked opponents, and ultimately secured a place on the podium for both of her single events—winning silver in U17 Girls’ Singles and bronze in U19 Girls’ Singles.

Beyond Sports: A Well-Rounded Scholar-Athlete

Balancing the demands of Grade 11 academics with the rigorous training and travel schedule of a high-performance athlete is no small feat. Jessie’s ability to manage both reflects her discipline, time management, and perseverance—qualities that will serve her well in university and beyond.

Her experience competing internationally has also helped her develop key skills such as adaptability, teamwork, and performing under pressure. These experiences will be valuable as she prepares for university applications next year.

Aiming for the Future: Pan Am and Beyond

At the end of April, Jessie will compete in a selection event for the 2025 Pan American Junior Games in Asunción, Paraguay, and the Pan American Junior Championship in Rosario, Argentina. These tournaments will be important opportunities for her continued growth as an athlete. While balancing academics and sports remains challenging, she remains committed to both as she looks ahead to the future.
