Ask The Experts: Byung Jung An, No. 325 Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question:

Hi, I am a long time player, but recently got back into playing regularly as our gym has started a program. I am a better than average player and at one point was 3rd in our county wide tournament. I am taking some lessons from someone and he suggested I look into improving my equipment. I have a strong forehand and backhand. Most often when I am in a defensive situation I use my backhand. Any suggestions on a new blade and rubber combination would be greatly appreciated. I am 70 years old. Thanks, Roger

Your Ask the Experts question was answered by Byung Jung An. He is a coach at Han In Table Tennis Club in Palisades Park, New Jersey. Coach An’s response is as follows:

Roger,

I recommend you try the Viscaria! The balance of attack and defense is excellent; used by many top players in the world.

For the rubber, I recommend Tenergy 05 on both side. It offers a lot of spin and it is also lasts a long time.

This combination is around $320 retail price. This price is about the middle of the total product price, so it will not be a big burden.

Best!

Coach Sam
