Ask The Experts – Q: What should I do so that the ball rotates much more… (English & Español)

(by: Bowmar Sports Team)

Pregunta:

Question:

Hello. What should I do so that the ball rotates much more forward, that is, topspin, both for the forehand and for the backhand? Thank you so much. Greetings.

Answer:

Thanks for your interesting question.

I believe that you understand the basic concepts for the correct execution of one of the most aggressive shots in table tennis, which is the forward spin shot known as topspin. So these tips that I give you start from the base that you know the rationale of the shot and you are seeking to increase the rotation of the ball.

The moment of contact between the ball and the racket should be the result of a harmonious and synchronized movement of the whole body, starting with the feet, transferring the weight of the body from one leg to the other, continuing with the waist, trunk, shoulders, arm, wrist and finally the hand. The more coordinated and greater use of the entire body, the better the quality of the effect. The point of contact on the racket is also fundamental, which must always be with the upper part of the racket, and just at the moment the ball bounces off the table at its maximum height. At that point, making an upward movement of the index finger on the racket at the last moment of contact can help improve rotation. The longer the ball stays on your rubber, the better the spin will be. Try to finish your shot a little higher towards the front. If you connect the ball at the bottom, you will improve the effect. If you want to improve the quality of the spin, you should focus on that in practice and for a while put speed training aside. Once you are able to increase the rotation or spin on the ball, you must work on speed.  As you improve and progress with these two techniques, you will achieve your goal.

The products you play with are also important to achieve better results. In the Butterfly line, we offer Dignics 09C rubbers that are specially designed for players who want to get the most out of their spin on the ball.

Your success in learning table tennis techniques has a lot to do with the number of repetitions and the discipline of the training.  I invite you to continue your practices with great enthusiasm, always thinking of a real objective.
