Nearly 1500 Players Set to Compete at US Open in Las Vegas

(by Steve Hopkins)

The 2024 edition of the US Open Championships will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Convention Center in Las Vegas.  Play will begin on December 16th, about a week from today.  There are 115 events including the premiere Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s & Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, age-tiered events, rating events, para events, Parkinson events, and Hardbat and Sandpaper events.

There are a total of 1484 players currently signed up.  It can be difficult to fully list the top players without knowing the seedings of the unrated players, but here’s a quick overview of some of the best players attending.  There are three players over 2800, including Kou Lei, Benedek Marton Olah, and Kanak Jha  (only 6 points separates those three top seeds).  There are 10 players between 2700 and 2800, including top US players Jinbao Ma and Jishan Liang as well as Korea’s Seungjun Lee.  There then is an incredible 28 additional players who are between 2550 and 2700.  In addition to those 41 players identified by their US rating, are 37 players (mostly international) who have no US rating -but who may be high seeds based upon international results.

Women’s Singles has 117 entries including Liu Gaoyang and Amy Wang as the top two seeds by US rating.  Liu is listed as having a 2600 rating, and there are 7 players between 2500 and 2600, and an additional 29 players between 2400 and 2500.  Like the men, there are many women entered who must be seeded by tournament organizers – those unrated players number 18 and are largely international players with substantial resumes who have not played in the US yet.
