Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question:

I am a teacher trying to write a grant for the Amicus-prime robot. We are hopeful that this robot will be able to handle all of skill levels. Most of the videos showing this robot show how fast it can serve. I am also interested to learn if it can be set to very slow speeds to be appropriate for adaptive phys. ed students that may have slower reaction time. We are hopeful it can be used to improve their dexterity and hand eye coordination but worried it will be too fast for them.

Answer:

This Ask the Experts question was answered by Larry Thoman. He is a Table Tennis Robot Guru. Larry’s response is below:

The Butterfly Amicus Prime is fully adjustable for all skill levels, from beginner to world-class professionals. There are 25 speed levels from very slow to extremely fast. And spin can be adjusted from no-spin, to light and medium amounts of spin, and even to extremely heavy spin. For beginners or adaptive PE students, I suggest adjusting the head height to level 4, Trajectory to the lowest level, Spin to 0, and Speed to an intermediate level, maybe 8 to 10. You can save these settings so they can be easily retrieved any time they are needed. Other settings can be made for your intermediate and advanced level students who have better hand-eye coordination and quicker reaction times.
