Ask The Experts: Brian Pace, No. 421

Butterfly Table Tennis Question and AnswerQuestion:I started playing again after a 30-year break. Techniques and equipment have evolved enormously. Of the 3 blades and combinations I try. My game is more of the mid-range Looper type, and solid on the counterattack. Here is my request: to progress in a coherent way I must of course train but above all identify a combination in which I feel in control while having enough power… I try them each one brings me + but I can’t still connect to a focuser only on her:…how to choose?Answer:
Hi Mario,
Your Ask the Experts question was answered by Brian Pace. Coach Pace is a National Level Table Tennis Coach with Dynamic Table Tennis and his response is as follows:

Hello Mario,

Thanks for your message, and welcome back to Table Tennis.

Things have changed since you played last, but you have created a good start for yourself. My suggestion for the mid-range style that you have would be –

  • Viscaria: The most versatile attack blade from Butterfly, and the Best Seller
  • Tenergy 80: This rubber is plays to the mid-range position on the table with a medium range of arc

This set-up will put you in the range of play that is comfortable for you without feeling like you have to force or finesse your shots.  If you find that you want to stay closer, then the Tenergy 05 is the ideal rubber, because of its closer range of play trajectory. If you find that you want to play long distance from the table, then the Tenergy 64 is the ideal rubber.

If you find that you want more touch from any of these rubbers, then choosing to use the “FX” rubber will allow you to have more feel on all the touch shots without losing power on the attack shots.

This same range of rubber exist with the Dignics line, and the biggest difference is the Dignics top-sheets create more spin.

I hope this moves you in the right direction with your training and improvement

Coach Pace
