Impressive Achievements by Carolina International Table Tennis Academy Players at WTT Youth Contender 2023

(by: Di Yu)

From August 1st to 4th, 2023, Charleston, West Virginia, USA played host to the WTT Youth Contender event, drawing young table tennis talents from across the globe. Among the participants, players from the Carolina International Table Tennis Academy (CITTA) stood out with exceptional performances, securing one runner-up and three third runner-up positions.

In the U11 Boys’ Singles category, Jacob Kordus showcased his prowess by earning the second-place title. The 9-year-old prodigy displayed remarkable skills throughout the tournament. After a hard-fought semi-final victory against Andrew Huang (3:1), Kordus faced a tough final match against Jaden Jia, ultimately finishing in second place.

Ryan Tao, another rising star from CITTA, demonstrated his dedication in the same category. Despite a challenging semi-final encounter against Jaden Jia (0:3), Tao’s perseverance shone through, securing him a commendable third-place finish.

Moving on to the U13 Girls’ Singles, Sarah Zhang exhibited her talent by clinching the third runner-up position. Overcoming several opponents, Zhang’s journey included a solid performance in the quarterfinals  with a 3:1 victory over Angel He. Although she encountered a formidable adversary in Abigail Yu during the semi-finals (1:3), Zhang’s efforts secured her a well-deserved third-place finish.

In the U19 Mixed Doubles category, the partnership of Rachel Wang and Daniel Tran (USA) marked a significant achievement for CITTA. Battling through intense matches, they managed to secure a notable third runner-up position. Their journey involved triumphs in the Round of 32, Round of 16, and Quarterfinals against challenging opponents from Canada, Brazil, and Argentina respectively. Despite a close semi-final loss to the Puerto Rican duo of Oscar Birriel and Alondra Rodriguez (2:3), Wang and Tran’s dedication earned them the third-place accolade.

CITTA’s exceptional performance at the WTT Youth Contender 2023 reflects the academy’s commitment to nurturing young table tennis talents. Each player’s determination, skills, and perseverance contributed to this remarkable success. Congratulations to Jacob Kordus, Ryan Tao, Sarah Zhang, Rachel Wang, and Daniel Tran for their outstanding achievements on the international stage of table tennis. Your dedication and hard work have truly paid off, and you have done your academy and community proud.
