Canadian Selection Tournament: Qualifications For Youth Pan American Championships

(by: Three10 Table Tennis Club)

Three10 Table Tennis Club participants excelled at the 2024 Canadian Pan Am Youth Selection Tournament and Table Tennis Canada Target Group Tournament.

The Canadian Pan Am Youth Selection Tournament was held April 26–28 in Mississauga, Ontario. The U19 and U15 divisions were open to competition for the top 10 athletes on the Canadian rating list. The “snake” method was used to divide the athletes into two groups. The best three players from the group stage moved on to the knockout round, where they faced off for three berths to represent Canada in Lima, Peru at the 2024 Pan Am Youth Championships.

After losing two matches to opponents from her home province, Jessie Xu finished the group stage in third place. On the last day of the competition, Jessie found her confidence again and won the U19 category.

In addition, three of our athletes were competing in U15 events as well: Jaelen Chen (seeded 3) in U15B, Sunny Zhang (seeded 2) in U15G, and Ruoyan Yang (seeded 7) in U15G. Every player proceeded to the knockout round after finishing the group stage. Sunny Zhang advanced to the U15 event quarterfinals but lost in the semifinal and finished third overall. Though they were both unable to advance beyond the quarterfinals, Ruoyan Yang and Jaelen Chen both finished in fifth place in their divisions.

Cindy Zhu participated in the TTCan Target Group event in U13 division. After defeating the players ranked second and third in the group stage, Cindy was able to secure the top spot in the group stage. Cindy advanced to the championship match in the knockout round but was defeated by the player with the highest ranking in the competition. For Cindy Zhu, who was just 11 years old, this was a fantastic accomplishment. She will get the opportunity to compete for Canada in the Dominican Republic at the U11 and U13 Pan Am Championships.

Our athletes’ accomplishments fill us with pride because they have all either surpassed or fulfilled our expectations. We wish them all the best in the forthcoming WTT Youth Contender competition in San Francisco, and ultimately place well at the Youth Pan Am Championships.
